Uses of Sports in exercise therapy

Physiotherapy has been an important part of the sport medicine team. At the London 2012 Olympic Games, physiotherapists formed the largest professional community at the Olympic Games. The important role of sports physiotherapist in international and professional sports (and at all other levels of sport, for that matter remains to provide care and rehabilitation for injuries and to provide performance support through injury prevention, maintenance and recovery treatments.

The general understanding of the role of sports physiotherapist in helping athletes during competitions or big games seems to be that the physio is a 'provider of medical treatments linked to serious injuries. Recent studies have shown that sport physios also play a much greater role in supporting uninjured athletes.

A rational assumption for this may be that physiotherapy sessions based on preserving physical activity as well as helping with rehabilitation have a role to play in supporting athletic performance. It was also clear that athletes needed follow-up visits for the same condition/injury and that muscle injuries were the most frequent. In addition, the non-injury physiotherapy sessions/meetings represented the need for musculoskeletal system repair, injury prevention measures and rehabilitation assistance.

Sport physiotherapists working with international/elite athletes often face the task of continuing treatment of pre-existing conditions. Overuse injuries by athletes have been reported as the most common reason for attending physiotherapy services (44 percent ).

It is clear that the role of physiotherapist in the field of international sport is extensive and that the role of physiotherapist goes beyond the treatment of injury to a much broader role, including providing assistance with musculoskeletal maintenance and recovery, as well as injury prevention strategies.

Sport physiotherapists are also in a rare place to be able to take on leadership positions. The breadth of the sport physiotherapist skills set, which includes skills such as understanding acute care management, exercise and evidence-based approaches to injury prevention and treatment, as well as general strength and fitness concepts, enables sports physiotherapists to oversee the health of athletes in a variety of sports codes.

Another advantage is the vast amount of time that sports physiotherapists spend communicating directly with athletes.
